I opened my mailbox, grabbed the mail, and walked back down my driveway toward my house.
As I sifted through the mail I saw all the regular junk…
Credit card offer here.
Some scam about my car’s “protection plan” expiring there (although it looks super official).
And a colorful piece of direct mail for a sales event at a local car dealership…
I’m not sure why, but this last one piqued my interest enough to have a deeper look so I trashed everything else and carried it inside with me.
Once inside I flipped it over and saw a scratch-off game.
You know what I’m talking about…
One of those games where you use a quarter to scratch off a sticker to see whether or not you won a prize.
In this case, the potential prizes to be won included:
$20,000 cash
$500 cash
$300 Walmart gift card
60” flat screen TV
I showed it to my wife, who rolled her eyes and chuckled at me, but I grabbed a quarter and scratched away.
I mean why not? What did I have to lose?
Worst case scenario - it ends up in the trash.
Best case scenario - I win $20,000.
Once the sticker was gone I looked at my number and glanced up at the potential prizes…
And as expected - I won nothing 🤣
But this experience got me thinking about life and the role luck can play…
Because the way I see it, you have 4 types of luck.
1 is totally random, but you have a say in the other 3.
In the words of Harvey Dent - “I don't leave anything up to chance, I make my own luck.”
And today, I’d like to go over how you can create your own luck.
1️⃣ Blind Luck
Blind luck is if I’d won the $20,000 scratch-off prize.
It’s something that was completely out of my control and fell into my lap.
2️⃣ Stir the Pot Luck
This is the type of luck that comes from hard work, hustle, and motion.
You are out in the world running around, creating opportunity, and stirring the pot.
Think of it like a science experiment…
You’re taking a bunch of reagents, mixing them up, and seeing what happens.
This happened to me years ago when I published Pat Davidson’s first MASS book at Rebel Performance.
At this point, I was very early in my career and just hustling all the time to see what would come from stirring the pot.
I knew Pat was working on a project for Men’s Health, but didn’t know how it was going so I shot him an email to check in.
Well, it turns out the project had expanded beyond the scope of what Men’s Health wanted, and Pat was trying to figure out what to do with it…
And the rest is history.
I was in the right place, at the right time, with the right skill set.
We took the project, decided to call it MASS, and it turned into an ebook that sold thousands of copies and kickstarted a profitable and friendly partnership that lasted for many years.
But it only happened because I stirred the pot.
3️⃣ Spotting Luck
There’s a real estate investor where I live who’s been in the game now for 20+ years.
I was chatting with him the other day and he mentioned this “lucky” opportunity that fell into his lap.
It was a Friday and he was perusing the MLS looking for deals.
As he scrolled through homes for sale in our area he was stopped dead in his tracks by one that had just come on the market that morning.
He immediately contacted the realtor and met them at the house an hour later with an offer in hand that got accepted.
Well, it turns out this house was underpriced by about $40,000 and he immediately turned it around for a handsome profit.
His specific knowledge, skill, and experience allowed him to immediately notice a lucky break that other people didn’t.
In other words, he was able to spot luck.
4️⃣ Luck Magnet
This last type of luck is quite special because you become a magnet for others people’s luck.
Naval Ravikant describes this luck well when discussing deep-sea diving…
Say you are one of the best deep-sea divers in the world, known to take on dives that nobody else will even dare to attempt.
Well, one day someone finds a sunken treasure ship off the coast they can’t get to. Their luck has now become your luck.
If they want to get the treasure, they will have to come to you and you will get paid for it.
You build this type of luck by developing specific knowledge, a reputation, and a brand for being the person that helps with that sort of thing.
A real-world example of this is Warren Buffet.
Buffet has built a sterling reputation over the years for being an incredibly savvy, trusted, reliable, and high-integrity investor.
For that reason, he gets offered deals all the time.
He has created his own “luck.”
